THE PLAYSTATION 3 SLIM- Dollars and Sense

We all knew this was coming even when Sony denied the rumors. Ladies and Men-folk: it's matte black, it's slim, it's powerful, and it's sooo sweet. The new PlayStation 3 is here and it has lost a little weight while beefing up the biceps a the same time. And better yet it's only two hundred and ninety nine George Washington's. If you have been looking for that excuse, or for more potent collateral for the wife's sake, the wait is finally over. I give you Sony's polished new weapon against the dark armies of Microsoft:

Awesome isn't it? It takes up 32 percent less space and uses 34 percent less power then the current model. More important though it has all the same features but sports a bigger 120 GB hard drive. There is also a firmware update on the way, version 3.00 which will be released at the same time. Sony also says this one is more quiet (don't know HOW since I can hardly hear my own PS3 right now!). But since all of you know how I feel about this game system so I will get to my point. This blog is about hardware costs and comparisons. I want to show you some costs as compared to the XBOX 360 Pro hardware (because they are both the same price). My question is: "Which is more economical?" Well, here are the hard facts.

Both systems are $299. But there is a catch here and there on both sides of the argument. First of all, the Dual shock 3 controller for the PlayStation comes with an internal, rechargeable battery. It's built in so you never have to worry about popping off battery packs. Sony claims the batteries will function normally for close to 10 years before they stop holding a charge. Now here is the 360 Pro, but I see 2 AA batteries! WTF? Yep, it's not rechargeable. You have to buy the battery pack as an extra. What else? Well the hard drive space is worth mentioning. The Pro has a 60 GB HDD, the slim has a 120GB HDD. IF you want an additional 60 GB of space you can buy a Microsoft (and yes it HAS to be one of theirs!) hard drive for $99. I can go anywhere and get a SATA for my PS3 from any company I please. But perhaps the biggest difference is Wi-Fi. This is an area where Microsoft has never been good at. The PlayStation 3 has always had built-in wireless Internet, the Xbox never has. Once again this is an extra you have to buy, and it's another staggering $100.

So what are the exact prices when you take all this into account? If you want the 360 Pro with a battery pack, Wireless Internet adaptor, and 60 GB more space your total will come to around $520.00. Hmm...interesting. Or I guess $420.00 without the extra memory. There is one downside with the PS3 slim, it doesn't come with component cables like the XBOX does. That would be a nice addition. But when you factor that in, your total for the PlayStation comes to $320.00. This is the cold data...like it or not. And you factor in yet ANOTHER $100.00 if you compare the Elite (which is better with some extras included).

But even with all this said, I'm sure bloody Microsoft is going to lower it's prices even more. When you build shizzy systems it's an easy thing to do. But even with the 360 Elite at the same price, you still don't have a wireless adaptor. Sorry boys, factor in that hundred dollars once again. I'll end this blog with a brief speech about games. When the PS3 hit the shelves in 2006, it did not have a very good line up of games. That has changed now.

The tables have turned on Microsoft. The games I see and play for the PlayStation are superior to the Xbox. Halo 3 was perhaps the biggest video game let down in history. The story was terrible and the character development went down the tubes. However the game play itself was fine. What else is there? Fable? Yeah sure, but I'm not hot on it (I like the Elder Scrolls more). There is Gears of War which I actually really don't like. Just another bloody shooter. One exception I will point out is Mass Effect. I rented this when I first purchased an Xbox. It's a pretty decent game. But in my opinion the PlayStation has more. The Metal Gear Solid series for instance, a franchise that has lasted for over 20 years. MGS4 was simply incredible, it was frakking awesome video game-movie! Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, an unknown title when it first hit the shelves has ballooned into the most popular franchise for Sony. It is my new favorite game of all time (Super Metroid for the SNES being the only exception). And there is a sequal less then 2 months away! Infamous was a big win for Sony. It may be a shooter of a kind but the fact that you are either a superhero or a supervillian was great. Even the Motorstorm games are fun and are actually challenging for being racing games. Resistance: Fall of Man as well. These I love too but not as much. They are shooters, but what makes them unique is the story, an alternate past with crazy aliens taking over the world. This is my point. I like the developers for Sony more because I feel they can write better games.

I am being long winded. You know my point and so I will end here. And please take the time to watch both videos. And then go buy a PS3 slim...unless you already have a PS3.
